Abstract
When a molecule is excited with an optical pulse that is short compared to a vibrational period, excitation occurs without nuclear motion. Following excitation to the excited state, nuclear motion is initiated to accommodate the new equilibrium position of the excited state potential surface. As a consequence, the nuclei start to oscillate around a new equilibrium position.
