Coherent ringing in pulses from a mode-locked argon laser

Abstract

Conventional theories of the mode-locked operation of lasers describe the interaction between the optical pulses and atomic gain medium in terms of the rate equation limit of the coupled Maxwell-Bloch equations. Pulses from an argon laser with duration shorter than predicted from such conventional theories have recently been reported, however,1 and a theoretical model for the laser has been developed.2
