Abstract

It is now well established that pulse shaping in a colliding pulse mode-locked (CPM) dye laser at least benefits from the interaction between group velocity dispersion (GVD) and self-phase modulation (SPM). This leads to the concept of solitonlike pulses. A soliton can be defined either as a solution of the nonlinear Schrodinger equation (NLSE) or as a stable solution for propagation in a nonlinear medium exhibiting GVD and SPM.
