Abstract
A recent model for a light-induced phase transition in amorphous transparent materials has predicted that an insulator—metal transition can occur at intensities of the order of 10 GW/cm2.1,2 Based on the large number of reports in the literature on fiber second harmonic generation (SHG), which find that fibers could not be conditioned with pulses having peak powers below ~50G W (~5 GW /cm2), we have experimentally investigated the IR threshold behavior.
