Abstract

Recently It has been demonstrated that a mode-locked argon laser operating in the superfluorescent regime can generate pulses with peak power in the kilowatt region.1,2 These pulses can be exploited to generate a variety of nonlinear effects. In particular, coupling the pulses into a single-mode fiber generates strong stimulated Raman emission in the 529-nm region. This Raman emission precludes the compression of the incident pump pulses by conventional grating pulse compression techniques but can be used to advantage to generate subpicosecond pulses in a fiber Raman laser.
