Abstract

Laser cooling of atoms with the radiation pressure is limited by random recoil of spontaneous emission from the excited state. This quantum limit of temperature is given by T=hɣ/2k, where ɣ is the rate of spontaneous emission. For a lifetime of 16ns in Na. the limit is calculated to be T=0.24 mK.
