Abstract

Nonlinear effects in optical fibers have been viewed primarily as a limitation on the performance of optical communication systems. In this paper, we describe a system which uses the dominant nonlinearity in fibers, stimulated Brillouin scattering, to select, amplify and demodulate wavelength multiplexed frequency-shift-keyed (FSK) channels. Brillouin gain has previously been used to amplify data carrying signals [2,3] and we have described its application to channel selection in wavelength multiplexed systems [4].
