INFLUENCE OF OPTICAL PENETRATION DEPTH IN LASER SURGERY

Abstract

Precise laser processing of biological materials depends on a high absorption at the employed wavelength. Radiation at 2.94 pm or 10.6 µm is therefore well suited for surgical applications, as these wavelengths are strongly absorbed in water, a main constituent of tissue [1]. The effects on tissue of intense laser radiation at these two wavelengths are compared.
