Abstract

Atomic or molecular state distributions produced in optical collisions serve as a unique probe of the collision dynamics. In an optical collision, light of a frequency not resonant with transitions of any colliding species is absorbed during the course of the collision. The light is normally detuned an amount Δ from an allowed transition. The product state distributions produced generally depend strongly on Δ, both through the Δ dependence of the optically excited (dissociating) molecular states produced and through the nonadiabatic dynamics of the subsequent dissociation.
