Abstract

Summary: Apart from the fundamental questions of plasma physics at a subpicosecond time-scale, a major driving, force for the investigation of X-ray generation by subpicosecond laser pulses is the goal of a table-top X-ray laser. If one uses pulses of, say, 100 fs duration, pulse energies of only a few joules would suffice to irradiate a properly designed target with the necessary high power densities, provided travelling-wave excitation is applied. One can even hope to be able to use inner-shell schemes for the X-ray laser and create X-ray laser pulses of only a few fs duration in the case of self-terminating transitions.
