Abstract
The use of a high-power IR laser as the wiggler for a free-electron laser (FEL) provides a means to generate coherent x radiation using an electron beam of very modest energy (~5 MeV). Such a device has never been built, and its realization would open a completely new regime of the FEL to experimental study.
