Single atom spectroscopy

Abstract

In recent years, several groups have not only trapped and laser cooled single atomic ions but have embarked on a series of single-atom experiments that have led to better understanding of the interaction of light with matter. The observations of quantum jumps and photon antibunching1-4 are important examples.
