Abstract
Substantial progress has occurred in the last decade in understanding and exploiting the interaction of high-intensity laser light with matter. Advances have been made in the fields of laser fusion, soft x-ray lasers, and laser-produced x-ray sources. We briefly describe the physics of intense laser-matter interaction and illustrate our present understanding by describing several recent experimental results.
