Nonradiative decay of Rydberg states in simple diatomic molecules

Abstract

We used stepwise laser excitation to investigate the Rydberg states of NO and CO. Multiphoton excitation by a pulsed laser is used to populate long-lived intermediate states in a supersonic molecular beam. A pulse-amplified cw laser subsequently excites the Rydberg states with a resolution as high as 0.003 cm-1. The natural linewidths of states that decay by autoionization or predissociation can usually be resolved fully, and from them the lifetimes can be determined directly.
