Laser-excited molecular beam scattering: NO(v= 1)/Ag(110)

Abstract

The role of vibrational degrees of freedom in gas-surface interactions is of fundamental interest. Accordingly, we utilized laser excitation to produce a vibrationally excited molecular beam for scattering studies.1-3 In conjunction with sensitive laser multiphoton ionization techniques, this has enabled us to perform state-to-state scattering studies on single-crystal surfaces in a UHV chamber. Using this technique, the roles of surface roughness and electron-hole pair excitation have been investigated.2,3 The role of corrugation on internal energy transfer and angular and velocity distributions is examined.
