Abstract

We have investigated the internal energy distribution of hydrogen molecules desorbing from palladium surfaces by laser-induced fluorescence. A tunable VUV laser at λ ~ 106 to 112 nm excited H2 molecules in the (0-0) and (3-0) Lyman bands and D2 in the (0-0), (1-0), (2-0), (3-1), and (4-1) Lyman bands of the B1Σu+X1Σg+transition transition. The VUV light was generated by frequency tripling a tunable UV laser in Xe and Kr. About 2.5 × 109 VUV photons/pulse were available in the interaction region. From the excitation spectra obtained the state population in the electronic ground state could be derived. The distribution in the rotational degree of freedom could be described to a good approximation by temperature.
