Abstract
Because of its energy level structure and oscillator strength distribution, atomic mercury appears to be the nonlinear medium of choice for generation of 120-140-nm light by sum frequency mixing. A dearth of measured atomic matrix elements and absorption coefficients has hampered development of this source.
