Abstract

Understanding electromagnetic wave interaction with nonlinear/dispersive media is of increasing importance in optical communication, optical computing, and optical switching. We devise a new expression starting from Maxwell’s equations using a perturbation technique. Previous work in optical fibers has centered on the so-called nonlinear Schroedinger (NLS) equation,1 which requires anomalous dispersion [β(2) < 0].
