Abstract
It has long been recognized that the performance of flashlamp-pumped Nd3+-doped lasers can be increased if efficient sensitization of the Nd3+ ions by Cr3+ ions can be achieved. The search for such systems has been conducted for over a decade with little success until recently with the discovery of Cr:Nd:GSGG.1,2 However, co-doped GSGG, while an excellent laser for some applications, does not appear promising for laser fusion because of undesirably high values of the stimulated emission cross section and estimated nonlinear refractive index.3
