Enhanced second harmonic sensitivity to electronic states: (SHG) study of Si(111)-7 × 7

Abstract

Second harmonic generation (SHG) has been used as a sensitive probe of adsorbate-induced changes in the electronic properties of surfaces from which information about adsorbate coverage, bonding site, and adsorbate orientation may be deduced.1 The surface science community has been somewhat skeptical about the technique because it was difficult to interpret the data in terms of how specific electronic states behaved during adsorption processes. Could SHG ever yield detailed information such as that available with UPS or EELS?
