Frequency locking and chaos in optical bistability with competing interactions

Abstract

Recently Ikeda and Mizuno1 have theorized that an optical bistable device with two delayed feedback loops can be the source of competitive effects which force the system to fall into a state of frustrated instability; in this condition, single-frequency oscillations are observed which are very sensitive to the parameter w = |t1t2|/(t1 + t2), where t1 and t2 are the delay times. For large values of the parameter, τ = (t1 + t2)γ; (γ−1 is the relaxation time of the nonlinear medium).
