Abstract
The signal intensity of the phase-conjugate wave in a standard four-wave mixing geometry in Na or Sm vapor with noble gases shows a sharp maximum as a weak external magnetic field is tuned through zero. The signal depends strongly on the buffer gas pressure, on the detuning from the atomic resonance line in Na or Sm, on the state of polarization, and on phase modulation of the incident lightwaves.
