Demonstration of instabilities and chaos in a single longitudinal, multitransverse mods cw CO2 laser

Abstract

Here we report on observation of instabilities leading to chaos in a single longitudinal but multi-transverse mode cw CO2 laser. The route to chaos provides evidence of a Ruelle-Takens-Newhouse scenario where interestingly three-frequency rather than the more common two-frequency quasi-periodic motion precedes chaos. The results are obtained under the normal operating conditions of a commercial cw CO2 laser in which cavity tuning is used as the control parameter.
