Abstract
We investigate the scaling of the pump energy for frequency-converted VUV sources to the 1-J range. Effective conversion of such radiation will increase the VUV energy available in such sources by over an order of magnitude, thereby increasing its usefulness for many applications. However, all the experimental results reported to date, which were done with pump energies generally less than 50 mJ, have shown that the conversion efficiency to the VUV is limited by one or more competing mechanisms. Increases in VUV energy can therefore only be obtained if the efficiency is maintained as the pump energy is increased.
