Abstract

Laser optical pumping of atomic barium leading to nuclear orientation of odd A nuclei has previously been studied in dilute barium vapor.(1)In order to optimize the parameters necessary for a laser induced gamma ray anisotropy experiment on the 10+ nuclear level of 134mBe have studied optical pumping of barium vapor in the presence of buffer gases. These measurements provide cross sections of intrinsic interest as well as of importance for experiments to measure isomer shifts of microsecond lived nuclear states.
