Abstract

Consider a gaseous medium with three energy levels (0,1,2), where |0〉is the ground state and the 0→1 and the 1→2 transitions are electric-dipole allowed. When the gas is irradiated by two laser beams E11) and E22), where ω1 is near resonance to the 0 → 1 transition and ω1 + ω2 is slightly off resonance to the 0→2 two-photon transition,1,2 the refractive index of the medium at ω2 will depend on the intensity of the field at ω1, and vice versa.
