Abstract
Spatial and temporal incoherence of a laser has potential applications in laser fusion for achieving uniform illumination of targets1,2 and for controlling parametric instabilities.3 Both uniform illumination and instability control will probably be required to achieve high pellet gains. We have begun an experimental program at the Naval Research Laboratory to study the benefits and problems associated with illuminating targets by high-power laser beams that have controlled amounts of spatial and temporal incoherence.
