Abstract
The properties of dimer and trimer emission following optical excitation of the cryogenic rare-gas-F2 solutions Ar(F2), Kr(F2), Xe(F2), N2(F2), Ar(Kr, F2), Ar(Xe, F2), and Kr(Xe, F2) at 351, 248, and 193 nm are reported. Fluorescences corresponding to dimer [KrF*(D1/2 → X1/2), XeF*(D1/2 → X1/2), XeF*(B1/2 → X1/2), XeF*(C3/2 → A3/2)] and trimer (Ar2F*, Kr2F*, Xe2F*) transitions are detected. Concentration levels of 1 to 300 ppm, 2 to 220 ppm, and 250 to 1800 ppm were used for F2, Kr, and Xe, respectively. Nearly all solutions investigated exhibited strong visually observable emissions in various dimer and trimer bands even at modest intensities (<106 W/cm2) of excitation.
