Abstract
Experiments with many polyatomic molecules indicate that infrared multiple-photon absorption is fluence dependent rather than intensity dependent. We consider an anharmonic vibrational mode pumped by a laser and coupled to a quasi-continuum of background modes. For realistic molecular parameters the laser-molecule dynamics are chaotic, with the consequence that the number of absorbed photons increases with the fluence of the applied field. Chaotic dynamics is also found in a vibration-rotation model. Reasons are given for expecting our conclusions to be relatively insensitive to the details of our model.
