Abstract

We describe an external laser frequency stabilizer, capable of locking the frequency of a laser beam to a passive optical cavity with the help of a novel frequency transducer, combining an acousto-optic frequency shifter with a fast electro-optic phase modulator. In initial experiments, we have reduced the line width of a commercial cw dye laser from about 2 MHz to about 20 kHz by sending the laser output through this device.
