Abstract
We investigate the dynamics of optical absorption in GaAs MQWS at room temperature under ultrashort excitation near the fundamental absorption edge. In particualar, we are interested in the excitation of nonequilibrium distributions of excitons and carriers which have a mean energy of less than kT for the lattice. Our 150 fs optical pulses are shorter than the longitudinal optical phonon scattering time and hence we are able to observe such nonequilibrium distributions at room temperature for the first time. We observe partial relaxation of induced absorption changes in 300 fs, and interpret this as equilibration of the electron-hole system with the lattice.
