Optical Bistability and Instabilities via Diffraction-Free-Encoding and a Single Feedback Mirror

Abstract

We report experimental, numerical, and analytical studies of both diffraction-free-encoding (DFE) optical bistability using a single feedback mirror and this system's delayed feedback instabilities. In the first experiment on self-focusing bistability, self-trapping was used to effectively move the focus from the input to the exit of a long cell, providing strong feedback with the cell exit imaged on itself by a single feedback mirror.1 Recently we have seen self-defocusing and self-focusing bistability using a short sodium cell.2
