Abstract
Second-harmonic (SH) generation from dye monolayer coverages adsorbed on fused-silica substrates has been demonstrated recently.1’2 It has also been shown that this effect can be greatly enhanced if the harmonic light is at resonance with the S1-S2 band-to-bandtransition of the dye molecules. With a spectral enhancement of up to a factor 100, this technique of surface spectroscopy may be used to characterize the adsorbed monolayer with respect to the nature of the adsorbate and its coverage density.
