Wavefront-Engineered Grating Coupler for Long-Working-Distance Fiber-to-Waveguide Coupling

Abstract

A silicon photonic long-working-distance grating coupler is presented and experimentally demonstrated. The device works by reshaping the grating stripes in order to generate an upward-focusing beam. This allows the fiber to be situated at distances well beyond the Rayleigh length. We show the design and demonstration of a grating coupler which focuses the light at a height of 230 µm to a standard single-mode fiber showing the same loss value as an standard flat grating which requires much greater proximity.
