Intensity and Polarization Modulation by Electrical Biasing of a Conductive Optical Waveguide

Abstract

Modulation of both the intensity and the polarization of 1.5 pm radiation in silicon waveguides is obtained by applying a voltage to the waveguide with respect to an adjacent electrode. The effect is the result of both the absorption of water to and modification of surface states on the waveguide.
