Abstract

This paper reviews silica-on-silicon and silicon-on-insulator fabrication technologies in application to wavelength-division multiplexing optical communication systems. Whereas SOS components are becoming commercially available, technology for high index contrast silicon-on- insulator devices is now under active research.
