Abstract

We describe an integration platform known as asymmetric twin waveguide (ATG), whereby any combination of high performance optical functions can be “laid out” on a chip using CAD-based design, thereby bringing the simplicity and performance advantages inherent in Si electronic integration to photonics. This flexible integration platform has resulted in the demonstration of a growing “library” of photonic components and integrated circuits, including lasers integrated with modulators (EMLs), arrayed waveguide grating receivers, balanced photodetectors for coherent optical communications, and ultrafast optical switches.
