Effect of transverse erbium distribution on the gain of doped waveguide amplifiers

Abstract

Accurate simulation results show that waveguide amplifiers suffer little gain reduction if Erbium is not confined in the core, in spite of heavy absorption in the unpumped regions, provided that the pump power is sufficiently high. This permits the design of efficient Erbium-doped waveguide amplifiers.
