Tunable Long-Wavelength VCSEL for Flexible Broadband Metro Networks

Open Access Open Access

Abstract

The monolithic integration of an electrically pumped 1.5-1.6 um VCSEL and a cantilever-supported MEMS mirror results in a tunable laser with a continuous, repeatable and hysterisis-free wavelength-tuning characteristic. This characteristic enables accurate, fast and cost-effective wavelength locking before the transmission is turned on, a critical feature for reconfigurable WDM metro networks.
