Abstract
Modulation responses are important for high-speed applications of DFB lasers. Analytical expressions for the small-signal modulation responses are well known and have been used extensively for modeling of dynamic characteristics of seminconductor lasers[1]. These formulas are, however, derived from the conventional rate equations. Important effects in DFB lasers such as complex coupling coefficients and spatial-hole burnings are not adaquately considered. To overcome these shortcomings, we have derived approximate formulas for the modulation response of a compelx-coupled DFB laser with arbitrary structures and bias current, based on a rigorous rate equation formulations[2].
