Abstract
Recently, there has been an increasing interest in studying the properties of annealed proton- exchanged (APE) structures in LiTaO3 due to its large electro-optical and nonlinear coefficients, as well as a higher optical damage threshold than that of LiNbO3. Previous studies have illustrated some of the anomalous features of waveguides formed in LiTaO3 [1]. In this paper, we consider the most prevalent case for practical devices, namely, single-mode (around λ=1.31μm) channel APE waveguides. We evaluate their profiles by using white-light source measurements performed over the wavelength range 900 nm – 1700 nm. Simplicity in acquiring the necessary experimental data makes the applied technique a convenient tool for analyzing waveguide structures.
