Abstract
It is often the case that semiconductor rib waveguides are fabricated on substrates with refractive indices that are equal to or larger than those of the principal guiding layers. This is particularly the case in the GaAs/AlGaAs material system (for example, Fig. 1). In such waveguides the supported modes are not bound but leaky in nature. A leaky mode is characterised by a complex propagation constant β, where the imaginary part of β corresponds to the rate of power radiated.
