Abstract
There has been a surge of interest in silica waveguides with a high refractive index difference (high-A) for compact and high-density planar lightwave circuits (PLC's) and optical hybrid integrated circuits [1]. However, these waveguides have a small mode-field, which makes them difficult to couple to other optical devices. One possible solution to this problem is to adjust the mode-field diameter (MFD) of these waveguides to match with that of the coupled device. We have recently developed a local mode-field conversion technique at the waveguide end and achieved low-loss fiber coupling as a result [2]. However, it is necessary to be able to convert the MFD at any desired position of the waveguide in order to insert optical devices into the waveguide efficiently.
