Abstract

Integrated optic (IO) devices have been commercially available since the late 1980s. In the past two years there has been a significant increase in the availability and utilization of IO devices, primarily those fabricated in LiNb03 and glass. Today, there are over 10 companies providing a large variety of standard and custom devices. These devices are being used in both field trials and in commercial systems. This review will focus mainly on the available devices and some of their primary commercial applications with examples drawn from telecommunications. CATV, antenna remoting, fiber optic gyroscopes, instrumentation, and frequency-doubled sources.
