Abstract

Optical interconnects offer the possibility of eliminating interconnect bottlenecks in systems in which many daughterboards are interconnected through a backplane or motherboard. Specific advantages conferred by the use of optics include increased density with reduced crosstalk, ease of driving high fanouts, elimination of the need for careful impedance control, elimination of radiated EMI, and possibly reduced power dissipation compared to electrical interconnects.
