Abstract

The recent advent of fibre amplifiers has meant that fused silica fibres are now capable of carrying high-speed data (some ten’s of Gbit/s) over many thousands of kilometres. At present, electronic switches capable of processing such data streams are unavailable. In this talk we look at one approach to achieve ultrafast switching in the optical domain which uses the properties of nonlinear fibre devices for all-optical switching. Such simple processors allows complete transmission and manipulation of the data within a fibre environment. We will describe some of the latest developments in all-optical fibre processing circuits including the use of optically mode-locked fibre lasers for clock recovery and signal regeneration applications.
