Abstract

Low-cost and compact laser modules for subscriber systems require efficient and simple optical coupling with large alignment tolerances from a laser to a single-mode fiber. In order to achieve this a spot-size transformation of an output laser beam is very attractive. Several authors have reported the integration of a laser and a spot-size transformer and succeeded to improve optical coupling characteristics [1-2]. However in the reported structures the integration leads to the complicated fabrication procedure and the chip cost increase. Here we demonstrate a novel tapered thickness spot-size transformer integrated Fabry-Perot (FP) BH MQW laser suited for practical applications using a selective area growth (SAG) technique.
