Abstract

It has long been known that so-called single-mode fibers are really bimodal due to fiber birefringence.1 As a consequence, the fundamental equation which describes nonlinear pulse propagation is not, in general, the nonlinear Schrodinger equation. It is instead a set of coupled equations which can be written in the form2
