Abstract

This paper reports an investigation of the nonlinear properties of monomode fibre waveguides consisting of glass capillaries (bore radius ~1 µm) filled with organic liquids. We demonstrate, for the first time, ultrafast (<1 ps response) refractive nonlinearity, and the effective use of organic materials engineered to provide a large electronic refractive nonlinearity.
