Abstract

The use of birefringent graded photonic crystals is proposed for the realization of efficient polarization beam splitters. A gentle light polarization splitting is naturally achieved within the corrugated optical medium due to the different curved trajectories followed by the TE and TM waves. The exploited unusual electromagnetic phenomena are experimentally evidenced by scanning near-field optical measurements.
